microRNA 548v is a primate-specific, non-coding small RNA molecule that belongs to the larger miR-548 gene family, characterized by substantial sequence variation and broad genomic distribution due to evolutionary origin from transposable elements. Like other microRNAs, miR-548v is processed from a primary transcript and functions as part of the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC) to regulate gene expression by targeting the 3’ untranslated regions of specific mRNAs. It has been implicated in diverse biological functions, including suppression of inflammatory responses (notably by downregulating HMGB1 in human amniotic epithelial cells), with possible roles in the pathogenesis of preterm birth and other inflammatory states. The miR-548 family is poorly conserved and exhibits seed shifting, generating variable target profiles, which may contribute to dynamic expression and regulatory networks in human biology. It is considered a potential therapeutic target, especially in the context of inflammation and cancer, though specific drugs or clinical applications are still experimental.
