MicroRNA 548w (MIR548W)

Target
MIR548W
Molecular classification
MicroRNA, Non-coding RNA
01

Overview

MicroRNA 548w is an RNA gene belonging to the miR-548 family, a large and poorly conserved group of primate-specific microRNAs derived from transposable elements. Like other miRNAs, MIR548W is transcribed by RNA polymerase II, processed by Drosha and Dicer, and incorporated into the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC) to regulate mRNA stability and translation primarily via imperfect base pairing. Functional enrichment analyses indicate miR-548 family members (by extension, likely including MIR548W) regulate genes involved in cellular adhesion, cytoskeleton remodeling, cell cycle control, signaling pathways (MAPK, Wnt, p53), and pathways implicated in cancer and other diseases. There is limited direct functional or mechanistic data for MIR548W itself, and at present it is not considered a direct therapeutic target or druggable entity, although miRNA-based therapeutics are a growing area of research.
