MicroRNA 548x-2 (miR-548x-2, MIR548X2) is a predicted, non-coding RNA of the primate-specific microRNA-548 family, which are known to post-transcriptionally regulate gene expression. No substantial, experimentally confirmed biological role, disease association, or therapeutic relevance has been reported for miR-548x-2 specifically. Most available data on the miR-548 family concern other family members, such as miR-548m and miR-548j, which have shown involvement in cancer cell proliferation, migration, and invasion, but these findings cannot be extrapolated with confidence to miR-548x-2. In summary, MicroRNA 548x-2 is a poorly characterized and possibly nonvalidated microRNA; the available evidence is insufficient to classify it as a well-established therapeutic or disease-related target. Most information pertains to other miR-548 family members, and little to miR-548x-2 directly.
Not known for miR-548x-2. Generally, miRNAs work by binding to complementary mRNA sequences, resulting in mRNA degradation or inhibition of translation, thereby suppressing gene expression. Potentially, miRNA mimics or inhibitors could modulate its activity if validated.
