Overview

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) such as MicroRNA 548z (MIR548Z) are short (20–24 nucleotides) non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression at the post-transcriptional level in multicellular organisms. They are initially transcribed as longer primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs), which are processed and matured before being incorporated into the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC). This complex mediates gene silencing by mRNA destabilization or translational inhibition through imperfect base pairing with target mRNAs. The MIR548 family, to which MIR548Z belongs, is large and primate-specific, with many members showing sequence diversity and functional heterogeneity. While some microRNA-548 family members affect cancer invasion and metastasis, definitive functions for MIR548Z specifically have not been described in the literature to date[1][2].
