Overview

MicroRNA 550a-1 (MIR550A1) is a human gene encoding a microRNA, a class of small, non-coding RNA molecules involved in the post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression. MIR550A1 gives rise to mature miRNAs such as miR-550a-3p and miR-550a-5p, which have distinct biological roles. These miRNAs function by binding to the 3′ untranslated regions (UTRs) of messenger RNAs (mRNAs), resulting in translational repression or mRNA degradation. MIR550A1 and its mature forms have been identified as potential mediators in various cancers, notably promoting tumor proliferation and reducing overall survival in lung adenocarcinoma and esophageal adenocarcinoma. For example, miR-550a-5p directly targets and downregulates the tumor suppressor gene LIMD1, thereby facilitating tumor growth and proliferation in lung adenocarcinoma[1][2]. MIR550A1 is increasingly recognized as a prognostic biomarker, but as a microRNA, it is considered an indirect therapeutic target due to its regulatory, non-coding mechanism of action. No drugs are currently approved that directly target MIR550A1.
