MicroRNA 553 (miR-553)

Target
miR-553
Molecular classification
microRNA, Non-coding RNA, Regulatory RNA
01

Overview

MicroRNA 553 (miR-553) is a small non-coding RNA molecule that functions in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression, primarily by binding to target messenger RNAs (mRNAs) to promote their degradation or inhibit their translation. miR-553 has been shown to play an oncogenic role by promoting proliferation, migration, and tamoxifen resistance in breast cancer cells. It is involved in a regulatory axis with circular RNA BMPR2 (circBMPR2) and USP4, forming part of a negative-feedback loop in breast cancer biology. Outside of this context, miR-553 is generally classified as a regulatory microRNA without direct therapeutic targeting at this time[1][3][4].

Mechanism of action

Not applicable. There are no approved drugs that specifically target miR-553 as of the latest reports. Potential mechanisms, if developed, would be anti-miR oligonucleotides or miRNA mimics.

03

Biological functions

Post-transcriptional gene regulationRegulation of mRNA degradationInhibition of mRNA translationModulation of cell proliferationModulation of cell migrationRegulation of cancer cell drug resistance
04

Disease associations

Cancer (specifically breast cancer oncogenesis and tamoxifen resistance)Trichorhinophalangeal syndrome, type I (association listed)
05

Safety considerations

No direct safety concerns identified. General therapeutic challenges for targeting microRNAs include off-target effects and delivery issues.
06

Biomarkers

Increased expression in tamoxifen-resistant breast cancer cells suggests potential use as a biomarker for drug resistance or breast cancer progression
