Overview

MicroRNA 5572 (miR-5572) is a human-specific, non-coding RNA molecule classified as a microRNA, which primarily functions through post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression by binding the 3′-UTR of target mRNAs. Increased expression of miR-5572 has been observed in the spinal cords of patients with sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and is linked to decreased expression of SLC30A3, a zinc transporter gene implicated in cellular protection against ER and oxidative stress. Experimental evidence shows miR-5572 expression rises under low-zinc and ER stress conditions and its overexpression exacerbates cellular toxicity by promoting cell death associated with ER stress. The function of miR-5572 suggests a role in ALS pathogenesis and points to its potential as a biomarker, but there are no established therapeutic drugs targeting this microRNA and its utility as a direct therapeutic target remains unclear[1][4][5].
