Overview

MicroRNA 5586 (MIR5586) is a small, non-coding RNA molecule involved in the fine-tuning of gene expression in human cells. Like other miRNAs, MIR5586 is transcribed as a precursor that undergoes several processing steps, resulting in a mature ~22-nucleotide RNA. It regulates target mRNAs primarily by binding to complementary sequences in their 3' untranslated regions (UTRs), leading to translational repression or mRNA degradation. MIR5586 has gained interest as a diagnostic biomarker for classifying lymphoma subtypes, where miR-5586-5p expression can distinguish GCB-DLBCL from ABC-DLBCL. Its full spectrum of biological functions and disease involvement remains under investigation.

Mechanism of action

In principle, any miRNA-targeted therapy would use one or more of the following mechanisms: Antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) to inhibit miRNA function; miRNA mimics to restore lost activity; Small molecules or exosome-based delivery altering miRNA-mRNA binding.

Biological functions

Gene expression regulationRNA silencingPost-transcriptional modulationBuffering of gene expression and biological robustness
04

Disease associations

Cancer (notably associated with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma subtype classification)Other (miRNAs are frequently associated with cardiovascular, metabolic, immune, and other diseases, but direct roles for MIR5586 beyond lymphoma are not evidenced in available sources)
05

Safety considerations

No MIR5586-specific safety data reported; typical miRNA-based therapy concerns include off-target effects, immune activation, and delivery challenges
06

Biomarkers

MIR5586-5p is reported as a biomarker for distinguishing germinal center B-cell-like (GCB) diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) from activated B-cell-like (ABC) DLBCL
