MicroRNA 559 (miR-559) is an endogenous, small, non-coding RNA molecule that regulates post-transcriptional gene expression by binding to the 3' untranslated regions (UTRs) of target mRNAs, causing their degradation or inhibiting translation. It has been identified as a direct inhibitor of the oncogene metadherin (MTDH), suppressing the PTEN/AKT signaling pathway involved in cell survival and proliferation. Downregulation of miR-559 is associated with malignant progression in glioblastoma and acts as a tumor suppressor, inhibiting cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and promoting apoptosis. Similarly, reduced levels of miR-559 are implicated in the pathogenesis of psoriasis, serving as a promising diagnostic biomarker for disease severity. Current therapeutic research involves miR-559 mimics or inhibitors, but no approved drugs are available.
For experimental therapeutics: - miR-559 mimics: Repress oncogene targets (such as metadherin/MTDH), inhibit AKT signaling, promote apoptosis and suppress cell migration and invasion. - miR-559 inhibitors: Potentially increase cell proliferation, reduce apoptosis.
