MicroRNA 5590 (miR-5590) is a small, endogenous, non-coding RNA molecule that functions primarily as a post-transcriptional regulator of gene expression. Like other microRNAs, it binds to complementary sites in the 3' untranslated regions (UTRs) of target mRNAs, leading either to inhibition of translation or mRNA degradation. Specifically, miR-5590-3p has been identified as a tumor suppressor in ovarian cancer, where it downregulates the expression of Traf2 and Nck-interacting kinase (TNIK), thereby inhibiting the Wnt/β-catenin pathway relevant to tumor cell growth and invasion. Its expression profile and regulatory function suggest potential as both a biomarker for disease and a possible therapeutic target in oncology, particularly in cancers showing reduced miR-5590 levels.
