Overview

microRNA 564 (miR-564) is a small non-coding RNA molecule that regulates gene expression post-transcriptionally by binding to complementary sequences in target messenger RNAs (mRNAs), leading to their degradation or inhibited translation. miR-564 acts as a tumor suppressor in various cancer types. It is frequently downregulated in multiple human tumors, including papillary thyroid cancer, non-small cell lung cancer, breast cancer, gastric carcinoma, osteosarcoma, glioblastoma, prostate cancer, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Overexpression of miR-564 suppresses tumor cell proliferation, migration, and invasion and promotes apoptosis by targeting key oncogenes and signaling axes such as PI3K/AKT, MAPK, PTEN/Akt, and cell cycle regulators. It has been studied as a prognostic biomarker (e.g., in breast and thyroid cancers) and as a candidate therapeutic target for restoring tumor suppressor activity in cancer therapy, though direct clinical interventions or drugs targeting miR-564 have not been approved or widely reported.
