MicroRNA 5681a (miR-5681a, also known as hsa-mir-5681a or MIR5681A) is a small, endogenous non-coding RNA molecule belonging to the microRNA family. MicroRNAs are single-stranded RNAs, typically 21–23 nucleotides long, that regulate gene expression post-transcriptionally by binding to target messenger RNAs (mRNAs). This interaction generally leads to mRNA destabilization or inhibition of translation, thereby reducing protein output. While the biological and clinical functions of many human microRNAs have been characterized, the specific functions of miR-5681a are less well defined. However, expression of miR-5681a has been found to be associated with estrogen receptor-positive breast cancers, suggesting a role in cancer biology and possibly serving as a subtype-specific biomarker[3]. No drugs or targeted therapies are currently known to act directly through miR-5681a, and its broader physiological and disease roles, as well as the consequences of modulating its activity, remain a subject for future research.
