MicroRNA 570 (miR-570)

Target
miR-570
Molecular classification
MicroRNA (miRNA), Non-coding RNA
01

Overview

MicroRNA 570 is a human microRNA (non-coding RNA) that post-transcriptionally regulates the expression of various genes by binding to complementary sequences within target mRNAs, leading to inhibition of translation or mRNA degradation. It modulates diverse biological processes such as heat shock protein regulation, cellular senescence, inflammation, and cancer cell proliferation. The exact biological outcomes of miR-570 activity are highly context-dependent, with evidence for both tumor-suppressive and oncogenic effects in different tissues. Its clinical relevance derives from its involvement in cancer biology, chronic inflammatory diseases, and cellular aging, making it an emerging biomarker and therapeutic target for conditions like breast cancer, lung carcinoma, osteosarcoma, and COPD.

Mechanism of action

Drugs or molecules targeting miR-570 (e.g., antagomirs) act by blocking its ability to bind and repress target mRNAs, thereby restoring expression of proteins such as sirtuin-1, KLF9, and heat shock proteins. Metformin modifies its activity, leading to suppression of metastasis and autophagy by modulating downstream targets (LCMR1, ATG12).

03

Biological functions

Regulation of heat shock protein expression (post-transcriptional inhibition)Control of cell cycle progression and cellular senescenceRegulation of tumor suppressors, e.g., KLF9Modulation of inflammation, e.g., senescence-associated secretory phenotypeSuppression or promotion of cancer cell proliferation, motility, and invasion depending on contextRegulation of autophagy and metastatic potential in osteosarcoma
04

Disease associations

Cancer (breast, lung, osteosarcoma)Inflammation and aging (COPD, senescence)Other potential roles in multimorbidity and accelerated aging disorders
05

Safety considerations

Potential for off-target effects when inhibiting or mimicking miRNAs due to their broad regulatory rolesRisk of undesired regulation of the cell cycle, senescence, or inflammationChallenges in delivery and specificity for therapeutic miRNA modulators

Biomarkers

miR-570-3p expression levels serve as biomarkers for cellular senescence in COPD and aging-related diseasesmiR-570 expression levels correlate with cancer progression, therapeutic response, and prognosis (e.g., osteosarcoma metastasis, overall survival)
