MicroRNA 571 (miR-571) is a small non-coding RNA molecule involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression. It has been identified as a regulator of S phase progression and DNA replication in human cells, primarily exerting its effects by targeting Geminin (GMNN), a protein critical for preventing DNA re-replication and maintaining genomic stability[1]. Overexpression of miR-571 decreases Geminin levels, leading to aberrant DNA re-replication, DNA damage, and cell cycle checkpoint activation[1]. Additionally, miR-571 is implicated in liver diseases: its levels are upregulated in cirrhosis and fibrosis, where it may contribute to hepatic fibrogenesis and stellate cell activation through targeting genes such as CREB-binding protein (CREBBP) and potentially modulating Notch signaling[2][3]. Given its role in relevant signaling pathways and pathology, miR-571 has been suggested as a biomarker for liver cirrhosis and as a possible therapeutic target in fibrotic diseases[2][3]. However, it is not a classical therapeutic target such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter, and to date there are no specific drugs that directly target miR-571.
