Overview

MicroRNA 574 is a small, single-stranded non-coding RNA found in humans (gene ID: 693159, chromosome 4p14). It is processed via canonical miRNA biogenesis, resulting in two functional strands: miR-574-5p and miR-574-3p. miR-574 acts as a post-transcriptional regulator by binding to complementary sequences on target mRNAs (such as CCND2, FAM210A), leading to mRNA degradation or translational repression, and influences biological processes like cell proliferation, apoptosis, immune signaling, and mitochondrial function. miR-574 can also stimulate gene expression as an endogenous ligand for Toll-like receptor-7/8, triggering inflammatory signaling pathways. Dysregulation of miR-574 is implicated in the pathogenesis and progression of cancers, cardiovascular diseases, autoimmune and inflammatory conditions, where it is often considered both a biomarker and a therapeutic target. Modulation of miR-574 expression (using mimics or inhibitors) is under experimental investigation as a strategy for disease intervention, with complexities arising from broad biological effects and regulatory networks.
