Overview

microRNA 581 (miR-581) is a small non-coding RNA (18–24 nucleotides) belonging to the microRNA family, functioning mainly in the regulation of gene expression at the post-transcriptional level. It acts by binding to complementary sequences on target mRNAs, leading to mRNA degradation or inhibition of translation, and is a component of the larger regulatory system maintaining cellular homeostasis. miR-581 has been reported to function as a tumor suppressor in some cancers (e.g., hepatocellular carcinoma, prostate cancer), with its down-regulation associated with increased tumorigenesis. In gastric cancer, genetic variants affecting miR-581's interaction with the MUC4 gene may influence cancer risk and progression. Additionally, changes in miR-581 plasma levels have been associated with neurological recovery after stroke. Direct targeting by drugs is currently not reported, and its therapeutic utility remains largely investigational.
