Overview

MicroRNA-588 (miR-588) is a small non-coding RNA molecule belonging to the microRNA family that post-transcriptionally regulates gene expression by binding to complementary sequences on target messenger RNAs, leading to their degradation or translational repression[2][7]. miR-588 has been implicated in the progression and metastasis of various cancers and can function either as a tumor suppressor or oncogene in a tissue-specific manner. In lung squamous cell carcinoma, gastric cancer, and glioma, miR-588 has been found to suppress tumor cell migration, invasion, and metastasis by directly targeting and downregulating genes such as progranulin (GRN) and roundabout guidance receptor 1 (ROBO1)[1][2][5]. Conversely, in certain contexts such as ovarian and prostate cancer, miR-588 may act as an oncogene and increase tumor cell proliferation and radioresistance[4][5]. The expression level of miR-588 is associated with patient prognosis in several cancer types, making it a potential prognostic biomarker. Due to its regulatory role in cancer cell behaviors, miR-588 is under investigation as a possible therapeutic target, though its context-specific effects necessitate careful consideration of tissue and disease state[1][2][4][5][7].
