MicroRNA-598 is a member of the small non-coding RNA family that regulates gene expression post-transcriptionally. It is typically downregulated in several cancers, including non-small cell lung cancer, triple-negative breast cancer, ovarian cancer, colorectal cancer, and gastric cancer. Restoration or mimicry of miR-598 inhibits tumor cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and promotes apoptosis, primarily by silencing oncogenic targets such as ZEB2, JAG1, URI, and IGF1R. Its tumor suppressor role makes it a promising prognostic biomarker and candidate for RNA-based cancer therapies, though no approved drugs currently target miR-598 directly. Its main molecular classification is as a microRNA, and it is not a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or transcription factor.
miR-598 acts by binding to the 3′ untranslated regions (3′-UTRs) of target mRNAs, leading to their degradation or translational inhibition. It directly suppresses oncogenic proteins, e.g., ZEB2 (NSCLC), JAG1 (breast cancer), URI (ovarian cancer), IGF1R (gastric cancer). It also indirectly modulates signaling pathways such as ERK/Akt and cell cycle regulators.
