MicroRNA-599 (miR-599) is a short, non-coding RNA molecule (miRNA) that regulates gene expression post-transcriptionally by binding to the 3′-untranslated regions (3′-UTRs) of target mRNAs, leading to translation repression or degradation of the transcript[1][2][5]. miR-599 has been shown to play significant roles in several types of human cancers. In clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC), miR-599 acts as a tumor suppressor, inhibiting cell proliferation and invasion, in part through direct targeting of the high-mobility group AT-hook 2 (HMGA2) gene[1][2]. It also modulates tumor progression and metastasis in colorectal cancer by targeting SATB2, and similarly regulates other cancer-relevant genes in breast cancer (BRD4), hepatocellular carcinoma (MYC), and glioma (periostin)[1][3]. miR-599 can act as either a tumor suppressor or oncogene depending on the tumor context, with oncogenic activity reported in non-small cell lung cancer[1]. Its dysregulation has potential utility as a biomarker for cancer prognosis and potentially as a therapeutic target in multiple malignancies[1][3][4][5]. There are no known specific small-molecule drugs that directly target miR-599 as of now.
