Overview

MicroRNA-608 (miR-608) is a small, non-coding RNA classified as a microRNA, which regulates gene expression by binding to complementary sequences in the 3'-UTR of target mRNAs and suppressing their translation or facilitating their degradation[1][5]. MiR-608 is broadly expressed in human tissues, including brain and intestine, and its mature sequence is processed from a hairpin-shaped precursor molecule[3]. Experimentally verified direct targets of miR-608 include genes such as acetylcholinesterase (AChE), CDC42, interleukin-6 (IL6), macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF), transcription factor AP-4 (TFAP4), epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), and BRD4 (bromodomain-containing protein 4)[1][2][3][4][6]. MiR-608 acts primarily as a tumor suppressor, and its reduced expression is correlated with enhanced tumor proliferation, reduced apoptosis, and worse clinical outcomes in multiple cancer types[2][4][5][6]. Due to its broad regulatory role and interaction with numerous oncogenes and signaling pathways, miR-608 is being investigated as both a biomarker and a potential therapeutic target in oncology and other disease contexts[5].
