It is transcribed as a primary transcript that undergoes cleavage to form a stem-loop precursor and then a mature miRNA, which is incorporated into the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC)[1]. miR-609 guides RISC to target mRNAs by imperfect base-pairing, most commonly resulting in translational inhibition or destabilization of the mRNA, thereby regulating gene expression post-transcriptionally[1][3][5].
