Overview

MicroRNA 671 (miR-671) is a small non-coding RNA molecule transcribed from the MIR671 gene located on chromosome 7q36.1. It plays a post-transcriptional regulatory role, primarily by binding to mRNA targets and repressing their translation or promoting their degradation. miR-671 is involved in various biological processes, including cancer cell proliferation, migration, invasion, apoptosis, inflammatory response, neuronal activity, and bone metabolism. It regulates multiple signaling pathways—such as PI3K/Akt, Wnt/β-catenin, and NF-κB—and interacts with various circular RNAs (circRNAs) and long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in complex regulatory networks. Expression of miR-671 is dysregulated in different cancers and other disorders, with both upregulation and downregulation associated with disease states depending on context. As a result, it is studied both as a therapeutic target and as a biomarker for diagnosis, prognosis, and therapeutic monitoring, although direct drug targeting is currently at the experimental stage rather than established clinical practice.

Mechanism of action

miRNA mimics increase miR-671 levels to suppress target mRNAs. AntagomiRs/miRNA inhibitors decrease miR-671 activity, releasing inhibition of targets. Modulation of signaling pathways (PI3K/Akt, Wnt/β-catenin, EGFR, NF-κB, HIF-1α, STAT3, AKT/ERK/mTOR).
