Overview

MicroRNA 6721 (MIR6721) is a small (~20–24 nucleotides) non-coding RNA molecule found in humans, functioning as part of the miRNA regulatory system. Like other microRNAs, it is transcribed from DNA, processed into a mature form by Drosha and Dicer enzymes, and incorporated into the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), where it binds target mRNAs to inhibit their translation or degrade them. Recent evidence shows that serum levels of miR-6721-5p, especially when measured alongside miR-362-3p, can reliably distinguish grade 4 glioma from lower-grade gliomas, with high diagnostic sensitivity and specificity. This makes MIR6721 a promising candidate as a non-invasive biomarker in neuro-oncology. However, there is limited evidence supporting its classification as a therapeutic target, and no drugs are known to act directly on MIR6721. Key findings include: - MIR6721 is used as part of a serum miRNA panel for diagnosis and grade classification of glioma. - Associated biological roles stem from general microRNA involvement in key cellular processes and pathways implicated in cancer. - No direct interactions with drugs, nor established therapeutic mechanisms, nor specific safety concerns are documented for MIR6721.
