Overview

microRNA 6778 is a human microRNA derived from the intron 5 of the SHMT1 gene that acts as a non-coding RNA and post-transcriptional regulator of gene expression. Its “5p” form (miR-6778–5p) has been reported as a regulator of cancer stem cell maintenance and thus may be involved in tumor progression[2]. As with other miRNAs, it functions primarily by incorporating into the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC) and targeting specific mRNA transcripts to repress translation or induce degradation. The exact mRNA targets of miR-6778, as well as its comprehensive physiological and pathological functions, require further study. No drugs are currently approved or in clinical trials targeting this miRNA specifically.
