MicroRNA 6794 (miR-6794 (or MIR6794))

Target
miR-6794 (or MIR6794)
Molecular classification
MicroRNA (miRNA), Non-coding RNA
01

Overview

MicroRNA 6794 (miR-6794 or MIR6794) is a microRNA—a small, non-coding RNA molecule involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression[2]. It functions as a suppressor of metastasis in pancreatic cancer by downregulating genes such as RBBP4, thereby inhibiting cell invasion, migration, and EMT signaling[1]. Low expression levels of miR-6794-3p correlate with poor patient survival and increased cancer metastasis. The expression of miR-6794-3p can be silenced via promoter hypermethylation, which may be reversed by treatment with the DNA methylation inhibitor 5-aza-2'-deoxycytidine[1]. MiR-6794 has shown value as both a prognostic biomarker and a potential therapeutic target in pancreatic cancer.

Mechanism of action

Mimic or overexpression results in suppression of target gene expression (e.g., RBBP4). Inhibition results in increased target gene expression (e.g., RBBP4, BCAT1, etc.). Indirect inhibition of histone H3 methylation via RBBP4 downregulation.

Safety considerations

None specifically noted in the available literature; typical safety concerns would relate to off-target effects or miRNA delivery mechanisms in therapeutic settings (general concern for miRNA-based therapies)
