Overview

microRNA 6859-3 (miR-6859-3p) is a human microRNA implicated in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression. Recent studies identified miR-6859-3p as an indirect modulator of SOX9 mRNA and protein levels in breast cancer cell lines; its repressive effects on SOX9 appear to be mediated via complex regulation of transcriptional activators and other microRNAs rather than direct binding to the SOX9 3′UTR. Unlike classic therapeutic targets, miR-6859-3p functions as part of a regulatory network, influencing cellular pathways such as chromatin organization and cell cycle control. Its role in cancer biology may be cell-type specific and indirect; no drugs currently target miR-6859-3p, and it is not used as a clinical biomarker or has identified safety liabilities.
