Overview

microRNA 6886 (MIR6886) is a human microRNA gene producing a small, single-stranded, non-coding RNA molecule of ~22 nucleotides. Like other microRNAs, it is transcribed as a primary transcript from genomic DNA, processed into mature miRNA by Drosha/Dicer complexes, and functions primarily by binding to complementary seed sequences on target mRNAs. This binding leads to either degradation or translational inhibition of the mRNA, resulting in gene silencing. MIR6886 has been studied in system-wide comparisons and has been found to participate in regulation of gene sets involved in key signaling pathways such as the MAPK cascade, which is relevant in cancer biology. The biological and clinical relevance of individual miRNAs like MIR6886 continue to be investigated, but its classification as a microRNA indicates a general role in gene regulation and potential involvement as a therapeutic target or biomarker in disease.
