Overview

MicroRNA 761 (miR-761) is a small, non-coding RNA involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression by binding to the 3’ untranslated regions of multiple target mRNAs, resulting in translational repression or mRNA degradation[5]. It functions as a regulatory molecule with highly context-dependent effects, acting as a tumor suppressor in some cancers (such as osteosarcoma and certain gastric cancers by downregulating FGFR1 or RIN1, respectively) and as an oncogene in others (such as non-small cell lung cancer and hepatocellular carcinoma)[1][2][3][6]. miR-761’s manipulation can affect cell proliferation, apoptosis, migration, and invasion, and its dysregulation is associated with several types of malignancies. No direct drugs currently target miR-761, but its modulation is considered a potential therapeutic strategy in cancer[2][5][6].

Mechanism of action

Antisense oligonucleotides or mimics may restore or inhibit miR-761 function to regulate oncogenic or tumor suppressor pathways[2]. Regulation of gene targets (e.g., RIN1, FGFR1, Rab3D, GSK3β) via binding to their 3′ untranslated regions, affecting translation or mRNA stability[1][2][3][6].
