Overview

MicroRNA 7704 (MIR7704) is a small non-coding RNA found in humans, functioning primarily to negatively regulate gene expression after transcription. It has a distinct nuclear spliceosome-associated expression profile in cancer, where it acts as a tumor suppressor by downregulating the oncogenic long non-coding RNA HAGLR, altering cell cycle dynamics and potentially impacting cancer progression[1]. MIR7704 also uniquely enters certain gut bacteria such as Bifidobacterium longum, inhibiting bacterial growth and adhesion via suppression of the proB gene, implicating it in microbiome regulation and the pathogenesis of hepatic encephalopathy[2][3]. MIR7704 is under investigation as both a functional therapeutic target and a biomarker for cancer and microbiome-driven diseases, although no approved drugs target it directly. There are ongoing challenges in targeting miRNAs due to their pleiotropic biological effects and potential for off-target activity.
