Overview

microRNA 7706 (miR-7706) is a short, 20-24 nucleotide non-coding RNA belonging to the microRNA (miRNA) family[2]. miR-7706 plays a role in post-transcriptional gene regulation by base-pairing with target mRNAs to direct their degradation or reduce their translational efficiency through the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC)[2]. It is expressed in humans (alias hsa-miR-7706). Studies have shown that miR-7706 is upregulated in the serum of women with intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (IHCP) and correlates with total bile acid levels, suggesting value as a noninvasive diagnostic biomarker for this liver condition[1][3]. Functional pathway and gene ontology analyses suggest involvement in metabolic processes, localization, positive regulation of gene silencing, and several signaling pathways including p53, mTOR, and AMPK[1][3]. Additionally, decreased tissue levels of miR-7706 have been observed in breast cancer with lymph node metastasis, implicating a potential role in tumor suppression and cancer prognosis[4]. To date, there are no known drugs or therapeutic interventions directly targeting miR-7706, and it is not considered a classical therapeutic target such as a receptor or enzyme. Its main biomedical use is as a prospective disease biomarker for IHCP and cancer.
