MicroRNA 8059 (MIR8059, hsa-mir-8059) is a human microRNA identified as significantly downregulated in the blood of patients with extensive coronary artery calcification (CAC), suggesting it may function as a peripheral blood-based biomarker for the presence and extent of CAC. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression, and MIR8059 has been implicated in the regulation of genes involved in vascular calcification pathways, such as the vitamin D receptor, bone morphogenetic protein receptor, apolipoprotein L, and mitochondrial calcium uptake pathways. While it may serve as a biomarker for CAC, there is currently no evidence that MIR8059 is a direct therapeutic target, enzyme, receptor, or similar target class. Its main utility at present is as a potential disease biomarker, and there is limited functional or drug-targeting data available[1][3].
