Overview

microRNA-888 (miR-888) is a member of the microRNA family, a class of small non-coding RNAs (typically ~22 nucleotides) that regulate gene expression post-transcriptionally. miR-888 is primate-specific, X-linked, and has been identified as highly upregulated in aggressive forms of prostate cancer, promoting cell proliferation and migration by suppressing tumor suppressor genes. Elevated miR-888 levels in prostatic secretions and urine are associated with high-grade prostate cancer, indicating its promise as a diagnostic and prognostic biomarker, as well as a potential therapeutic target[2].

Mechanism of action

miR-888 negatively regulates the expression of target mRNAs by binding to their 3′UTRs, leading to repression of their translation or mRNA degradation, particularly suppressing tumor suppressor genes such as RBL1 and SMAD4[2].
