MicroRNA 891a (miR-891a)

Target
miR-891a
Molecular classification
Non-coding RNA, microRNA (miRNA)
01

Overview

MicroRNA 891a is a small, non-coding RNA molecule belonging to the miRNA class, transcribed as a stem-loop precursor and processed by DROSHA and DICER enzymes to become a mature miRNA. Incorporated into the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), miR-891a recognizes partial base-pair sequences in target mRNAs, predominantly causing translational inhibition or destabilization. It has been characterized as a suppressor of cell proliferation and migration in hormone receptor-positive breast cancer by directly regulating the metalloproteinase ADAM10 through interaction with its 3' untranslated region. Low expression of miR-891a-5p is linked to increased metastasis and poorer distant metastasis-free survival, making it both a promising therapeutic target and a prognostic marker in breast cancer. Different isomiRs (variants) of miR-891a may have diverse functions in other biological processes, including fibrosis regulation.

Mechanism of action

miRNA mimic: Increases miR-891a-5p levels, inhibiting cell proliferation and migration by downregulating target genes such as ADAM10. miRNA inhibitor: Decreases miR-891a-5p activity, leading to increased expression of target genes and enhanced cell proliferation/migration.

03

Biological functions
