Overview

microRNA 933 (miR-933) is a short non-coding RNA (approximately 22 nucleotides) classified as an intronic microRNA, located within the first intron of the human ATF2 gene[1][3]. It is co-expressed with its host gene ATF2 and regulates gene expression at the post-transcriptional level by binding to specific mRNAs, resulting in their degradation or translational repression[1][3]. miR-933 has been implicated in the regulation of insulin and glucose homeostasis, with potential roles in hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinism, and the development of type II diabetes mellitus through its targeting of genes such as MAP4K4, PRKCE, PEA15, BDNF, PRKACB, and GNAS[1][3]. Additionally, it is involved in neuronal regulation and protection by influencing apoptotic pathways and neurotrophic signaling and has been associated with various conditions including dementia, neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular disease, hyperlipidemia, and some cancers[1]. There are currently no known drugs directly targeting miR-933, and its utility as a biomarker and therapeutic target remains under investigation.
