Overview

MicroRNA-936 (miR-936) is a primate-specific, non-coding small RNA of 22 nucleotides located on chromosome 10q25.1, functioning as a regulator of gene expression predominantly by targeting and silencing specific mRNAs post-transcriptionally. It has been characterized as a tumor suppressor in various cancers—including non-small cell lung cancer, glioma, retinoblastoma, laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma, and hormone-independent prostate cancer—by downregulating oncogenic targets such as E2F2, ANXA2, HDAC9, CKS1, JAG1, and GPR78, leading to inhibition of cell proliferation, invasion, and migration, and promotion of cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. Additionally, miR-936 is involved in neural processes, restricting excitatory synapse formation and transmission by targeting TMOD2 in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, with increased levels observed in schizophrenia. There are currently no approved drugs targeting miR-936, but it may have potential as a biomarker and therapeutic molecule for some cancers and neuropsychiatric conditions [1][2][3][4][5][6][7].
