Overview

microRNA-937 (miR-937) is a small, non-coding RNA molecule approximately 21–24 nucleotides long, encoded in the human genome (chromosome 8) and classified under the microRNA family. It functions in post-transcriptional gene regulation by binding to complementary sequences in target mRNA, leading to mRNA degradation or translational inhibition, thereby modulating the expression of proteins involved in neuronal repair and potentially cancer progression. Experimental studies in Alzheimer’s disease models indicate that antisense-mediated inhibition of miR-937 can increase the neurotrophic factor BDNF, suggesting a role for miR-937 in neuronal repair pathways. miR-937 is also implicated in certain cancers, including cervical and endocrine gland cancers, but its precise pathogenic mechanisms in oncology remain less well characterized compared to its role in neurodegenerative processes. Currently, no drugs are known to directly target miR-937 in clinical use, and its therapeutic potential is still under investigation.
