Overview

MicroRNA-941-1 (miR-941-1) is a human-specific microRNA derived from non-coding RNA and plays a critical regulatory role in post-transcriptional gene silencing. It is involved in the regulation of multiple cellular processes, including cell cycle progression, proliferation, apoptosis, differentiation, and migration, primarily by binding to the 3′ untranslated regions (3′ UTRs) of target mRNAs and inhibiting their expression. MiR-941-1 is found to be highly upregulated in several cancer types, notably in triple negative breast cancer, where it acts as an oncogene promoting tumor cell growth and migration by modulating proteins such as Cyclin D1, p21, and PP2B-B1. Inhibition of miR-941-1 results in decreased tumor proliferation and increased chemosensitivity to agents such as 5-fluorouracil. MiR-941-1 is also upregulated in other cancers and certain inflammatory or cardiovascular diseases and is detectable in various human tissues, especially in pluripotent and neural cells. The molecule’s human specificity reflects its emergence in recent evolutionary history, and it has demonstrated utility as a biomarker for disease diagnosis and prognosis
