MicroRNA 941-4 is a human-specific and evolutionarily young non-coding RNA belonging to the microRNA class, functioning as a post-transcriptional regulator of gene expression by targeting and repressing the translation or facilitating the degradation of multiple mRNAs[5][1]. It is highly expressed in pluripotent and undifferentiated cells and is implicated in the regulation of major signaling pathways including hedgehog and insulin signaling[1][3]. Elevated levels of miR-941 have been observed in several cancers, such as breast cancer, where inhibition of miR-941 decreases cancer cell proliferation and tumor growth and can increase chemosensitivity to agents like 5-fluorouracil[2][7]. It is also implicated as a biomarker in cardiovascular disease, notably acute coronary syndromes, and is part of a microRNA signature that distinguishes leukemic stem cells in acute myeloid leukemia patients[8][3]. Its human specificity and copy number variation suggest a role in human evolution, particularly affecting genes involved in brain development and neurotransmitter signaling[1].
