MicroRNA 942 is a short, non-coding RNA molecule (miRNA) transcribed from the MIR942 gene in humans. It regulates gene expression by binding to complementary sequences in messenger RNAs, thereby inhibiting their translation or promoting degradation. Two mature forms, miR-942-3p and miR-942-5p, are produced from the precursor hairpin. Both have been implicated in the regulation of cell proliferation, migration, apoptosis, and invasion in a broad range of cancers, often acting as an **oncogene** (tumor promoter) but with some evidence of tumor suppressor roles in a context-dependent manner. One of its best-characterized targets is *FOXA2*, a transcription factor, which mediates much of its effect in breast cancer and possibly other tumors. miR-942's expression levels are frequently dysregulated in malignancy, making it a promising *biomarker* for diagnosis and prognosis, though there is little evidence that it functions as a classical direct drug target or receptor
