Overview

MicroRNA 9500 (miR-9500) is a small, non-coding RNA molecule approximately 70 nucleotides in length, processed to a 19-nucleotide mature sequence, transcribed from an intergenic region on human chromosome 3. It functions as a post-transcriptional regulator by binding to the 3’-UTR of specific mRNA targets, notably Akt1, leading to decreased translation of the protein without affecting mRNA levels. MiR-9500 is downregulated in human lung cancer cells and tissues, and experimental upregulation of miR-9500 suppresses cell proliferation, cell cycle progression, migration, tumorigenesis, and metastasis in lung cancer models, largely by targeting the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway. This makes miR-9500 a proposed tumor suppressor in lung cancer and a candidate for therapeutic investigation.
