Target intelligence / Profile preview
MicroRNA-98-5p (miR-98-5p) is a small, non-coding RNA molecule belonging to the let-7 family, which is highly conserved across species and plays a critical role in post-transcriptional gene regulation (miRBase, Accession: MI0000103). It primarily functions as a tumor suppressor by targeting the 3' untranslated regions (UTRs) of various oncogenes, including HMGA2, RAS, and MYC, thereby inhibiting their expression and suppressing cell proliferation and metastasis (PubMed, PMID: 31435355). In addition to its role in oncology, miR-98-5p is involved in modulating the immune response by regulating the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines like IL-6 and TNF-alpha (PubMed, PMID: 28656248). Its downregulation is frequently observed in several cancers, such as lung and breast cancer, making it a potential biomarker for diagnosis and prognosis. Although no miR-98-5p-based therapeutics are currently FDA-approved, research into miRNA mimics and antagomirs is ongoing to exploit its regulatory potential for treating cancer and inflammatory diseases. Key challenges for clinical translation include the development of stable delivery systems and the mitigation of off-target effects.
Binds to the 3' untranslated region (UTR) of target messenger RNAs (mRNAs) to induce translational repression or mRNA degradation.
