MicroRNA (miRNA) modulation refers to the regulation of gene expression through the action of microRNAs, which are small, non-coding RNA molecules. These molecules bind to target mRNAs, primarily at the 3′ untranslated region (UTR), leading to inhibition of mRNA translation, destabilization or degradation of mRNA. miRNA modulation is involved in a wide array of biological processes and is implicated in various diseases, making it a promising target for therapeutic intervention.
Antagomirs bind to specific miRNAs, preventing them from binding to their target mRNAs. miRNA mimics increase the amount of a specific miRNA in the cell, increasing its inhibitory effect on target mRNAs. Small molecule modulators affect the production or processing of miRNAs.
