Overview

MicroRNA-protein interactions encompass the molecular relationships between microRNAs (miRNAs) and proteins, particularly those involved in gene regulation. miRNAs primarily function as post-transcriptional regulators by binding to complementary sequences on target messenger RNAs (mRNAs), leading to mRNA degradation or translational repression. Argonaute proteins are central to this process, forming the core of the microRNA-induced silencing complex (miRISC) and mediating gene silencing. Numerous other RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) interact with various stages of miRNA precursors, influencing their processing, stability, and function. These interactions influence a wide array of biological processes including development, differentiation, apoptosis, metabolism, immune responses, and cancer progression.
