Tubulin Polymerization (Microtubule) (N/A)

Target
N/A
Molecular classification
Protein complex, Polymerization process
01

Overview

Tubulin polymerization is the process by which α-tubulin and β-tubulin protein subunits assemble into microtubules, a key component of the eukaryotic cytoskeleton. Microtubules are dynamic, hollow cylindrical structures crucial for cell shape, intracellular transport, chromosome segregation, and cell motility. The dynamics of tubulin polymerization are a major target for anticancer drugs, with agents either stabilizing or destabilizing microtubules to disrupt cell division.

Mechanism of action

Stabilizing agents promote tubulin polymerization/stabilize existing microtubules, preventing depolymerization. Destabilizing agents inhibit tubulin polymerization/destabilize existing microtubule structure, disrupting formation/functionality of spindles.
