Microtubule-associated protein 1A (MAP1A) is a high molecular weight structural protein predominantly expressed in the brain, where it plays a crucial role in the organization, stabilization, and cross-linking of microtubules with other cytoskeletal elements, such as actin filaments[1][2][3][5]. MAP1A functions mainly in mature neurons, supporting the cytoskeletal structure required for neuronal morphology and function[1][3][5]. It is synthesized as a precursor polypeptide and processed to yield a heavy chain and a light chain (LC2), both of which contribute to microtubule and actin binding, polymerization, and the maintenance of proper neuronal structure and function[1][2][3]. In contrast to MAP1B, which is more involved in neuronal development, MAP1A is upregulated in mature neurons and is essential for the postnatal maturation of the neuronal cytoskeleton[1][5]. While not considered a therapeutic target, MAP1A has been associated with certain neurological disorders in genetic studies, but no direct clinical applications or targeted drugs are established for this protein[2][3].
