Overview

Microtubule-associated protein 1S (MAP1S) is a cytoskeletal protein encoded by the MAP1S gene, involved in microtubule and actin cytoskeleton organization, and participates in processes such as chromosome alignment, apoptosis, and cell death. Microtubule-associated protein 1S is a ubiquitously expressed cytoskeletal protein classified as a member of the microtubule-associated protein 1 family, structurally containing heavy and light chains which form functional complexes. The light chain binds, bundles, and stabilizes microtubules and binds to actin, while the heavy chain regulates the light chain's activity. MAP1S is involved in the formation and organization of microtubule bundles, mediates mitochondrial aggregation and genomic destruction associated with apoptosis, and anchors the microtubule organizing center to centrosomes. It is expressed in a wide range of tissues and participates in cellular processes including metaphase chromosome alignment, cytoskeleton organization, cell death, and neuron projection morphogenesis. Research has implicated MAP1S in pathological conditions such as cancer, neurodegenerative disease, and age-related macular degeneration, although it is not currently a recognized therapeutic target.
