Overview

Microtubule-associated protein 2 (MAP2) is a neuron-specific cytoskeletal protein that plays a critical role in the structure, function, and plasticity of neurons. It exists as several isoforms (MAP2A, MAP2B, MAP2C, MAP2D) and is predominantly localized to the cell bodies and dendrites of neurons. MAP2 stabilizes microtubules, promotes their assembly, and crosslinks them with other cytoskeletal elements. It is dynamically regulated by various signals and its dysregulation has been observed in neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders. Antibodies against MAP2 are widely used as markers for identifying neuronal cells.
