Overview

Microtubule-associated protein 7 (MAP7) is a non-motor protein expressed mainly in epithelial cells and enriched in neurons, where it binds microtubules and plays a pivotal role in regulating microtubule-based transport. MAP7 interacts with microtubules through two distinct binding domains and recruits kinesin-1, a motor protein, thereby regulating organelle transport and axon morphogenesis. It promotes branch formation in neuronal axons and modulates cargo movement. MAP7 also contributes to spindle morphogenesis in neural stem cells and is implicated in muscle cell nuclear positioning and some cancer types through its regulatory functions[1][3][4][5]. Among microtubule-associated proteins, MAP7 is unique in its ability to both stabilize microtubules and activate kinesin-1-driven cargo transport, serving as an essential cofactor in cellular logistics and organization[3][4][5].
