Overview

Microtubule-associated protein 9 (MAP9), also known as ASAP (Aster-associated protein), is an essential protein for proper cell cycle progression and organization of the bipolar mitotic spindle[1][3][4]. It is required for spindle function, mitosis progression, and cytokinesis, and may also play a role in stabilizing interphase microtubules[3][4]. MAP9 is strongly expressed in tissues rich in microtubules, such as brain and testis, and localizes to microtubules and the mitotic spindle during cell division[1]. It has conserved domains involved in microtubule interaction and can be regulated by phosphorylation through Aurora-A kinase; its expression and proper function are critical for normal mitosis and prevention of aneuploidy and cell death. Disruption of MAP9 leads to mitotic defects, chromosome missegregation, and defective cytokinesis[1]. MAP9 may represent a potential novel target for antitumor therapies and is of interest in neurodegenerative disease pathways due to its role in neuronal microtubule dynamics[1].
