Overview

Microtubule-associated protein tau (tau) is a protein primarily found in neurons, where it stabilizes microtubules. It is encoded by the MAPT gene. Tau's function is regulated by phosphorylation, and its hyperphosphorylation and aggregation into neurofibrillary tangles are hallmarks of tauopathies, including Alzheimer's disease. Tau interacts with tubulin subunits to promote microtubule assembly and stability, which are essential for axonal transport and neuronal polarity. Targeting tau is a therapeutic strategy for neurodegenerative diseases.
